The HIM Supervisor is responsible for supervising the operations of the HIM department.
The supervisor directs and monitors the activities of the department including staffing, processes, coding, and accuracy of medical records.
The HIM Supervisor directs the operations of the HIM department and has responsibility for all medical records including both inpatient and outpatient records.
The HIM Supervisor is responsible for implementing effective policies and procedures and monitoring the activities of the HIM area to assure completion, accuracy, and compliance.
Works in performing functions including clerical, chart completion, coding, monitoring and auditing, and release of information, while at the same time directing the department to meet staffing needs and efficiencies.
Essential Job Duties:
Leads and directs department procedures and processes.
Continually reviews and gives input on improving existing procedures and distributes all internal and external information as needed to ensure staff members have the necessary tools to successfully perform job functions.
This includes assisting and supporting plans to implement new procedures and processes and working in close coordination with other departments and vendors.
Observes opportunities for improvement, formulates ideas, and communicates those ideas.
Evaluates procedures and processes including adequate testing and verification to ensure accuracy, integrity, completeness, and security of data.
Strives to reduce variations in process in an effort to standardize work process in a continuous quality improvement effort and assists in completion of department quality improvement studies.
Monitors reports and statistics for compliance with regulations along with completeness and accuracy of data collected for quality service, appropriate billing, and ensuring compliance with rules and regulations.
This includes compliance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requirements, state and federal regulations, to standards to which DNV surveys including related NIAHO & ISO standards.
The medical record must include evidence of properly executed consent forms as well as information such as progress and nursing notes, documentation, records, reports, recordings, test results, assessments etc.
to justify admission, support the diagnosis, describe the patient's progress, and describe the patient's response to services.
Keeps abreast of new developments in the HIM field, communicates appropriately, and facilitates appropriate solutions or resolution.
Ensures staff work schedules are developed, reviewed with Revenue Cycle Director and implemented.
Additionally, time clock information is appropriately entered and reviewed with updates to Revenue Cycle Director.
This include coordinating time off requests with department productivity needs.
Leads, coordinates, and conducts meetings (including meetings on status of compliance and productivity monitoring, quality improvement initiatives), staff orientation and training, implements staff procedures, assists with follow-up on customer complaints and/or compliments, gives updates on duty assignment completion/work schedules, and answers staff related processes questions.
Coaches directly with staff on procedures and processes.
Supports staff by listening and providing guidance while performing coding and technician duties.
Communicates effectively with Revenue Cycle Director and gives input and feedback on adherence to performance standards and performs proper monitoring.
Helps coordinate and assists with the recruiting and interviewing as needed.
Actively participates in team oriented decision-making process.
Is a team player, willing to be flexible and is open to other's ideas.
Participates in hospital committees, task forces, and meetings as appropriate or assigned.
Gives input on budget related to lead position areas of responsibility.
This position performs supervision duties, as well as daily operational duties in HIM for coders and technicians.
Qualifications:
Graduate of an Accredited Coding program.
One year of coding experience in healthcare facility.
Three years of work experience demonstrating the ability to code using ICD-10-CM diagnosis, CPT-4 and HCPCS, encoder skills.
Must maintain a RHIT or RHIA certification.
Coding certification.
Organizational skills.
Problem solving skills and Attention to detail Computer experience (EPIC) Coding and insurance knowledge.
